While the game is never hard, there are some sections where your companion won’t be able to follow you, more specifically the boss battles, so you must face them alone, which strips away the abilities you’d normally have with a companion at your side like Bone’s heal ability or simply another character dealing damage to make encounters easier, so there is that unnatural bump in difficulty when facing enemies alone. The combat works similarly using swords, firearms and magic, but it feels way more unbalanced here than Risen 2, which is something that I realized only after starting my second playthrough with a focus on magic instead of swords. If you’ve played Risen 2 or even the first game, Risen 3 still follows the same formula, be it with a few improvements for the better and a drastically changed control scheme for the worse, which can be confusing if you’re jumping into this game straight after finishing the previous one as I did, because the remapping of certain buttons makes no sense, but once you do manage to reprogram your brain to the new controls, it’s still just as playable as the previous game, but even so that question of why they had to be changed at all will remain with you. Not only does it have less content than Skyrim by a lot, but it also has less replay value as I don’t see many people starting another playthrough of Risen 3. The game is longer than Risen 2, especially if you add all the DLC on top, so an average playthrough could take anywhere from 25 to 40 hours depending on how much of the side content you complete, but when you take into consideration that this game came years after Skyrim for the same price, there is definitely a lot of room for more. The story is not that great either but given that the game is more about exploration and not very linear I can forgive that.
